ARCHIVED - Barcelona taxi drivers to strike this January over ride-hailing apps
Drivers in Barcelona claim platforms like Uber and Cabify are “abusing customers” with high rates
Taxi drivers in Barcelona have called a four-day strike to coincide with the opening day of the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) fair on January 31. What’s more, the unions have threatened further industrial action during the Mobile World Congress event beginning on February 27 if their demands aren’t met.
Drivers are protesting against ride-hailing apps like Uber, Free Now, Cabify and Bolt, an open war that been raging for more than four years.
Arguing that these ridesharing mobile platforms not only steal their business but also allow citizens to operate without the expensive licences required by official companies, a spokesperson for Élite Taxi said “it seems incredible that we are threatening strikes to enforce the law”.
Last September, taxi drivers across Andalucia went on strike against the ride-hailing services and companies in Seville were forced to increase their standard rates in January by 6.15%.
“This is an armed robbery,” added the source, furious that these rental vehicles with a driver (VTCs) are still freely doing business despite the fact that the Catalan government made licences mandatory at the beginning of the year.
Taxi drivers are also unhappy that the ride-hailing companies want to increase fares by charging additional supplements when demand is high. This would allow them to bypass the regulated taxi rate, which other drivers have to stick to, earning them more money but ultimately “abusing customers.”
The drivers’ unions have asked the Barcelona local government to rein in these platforms and make them adhere to the regulated rate.
Hundreds of vehicles belonging to the main taxi driver associations in Barcelona, Élite Taxi and the Taxi Union of Catalonia (STAC) formed a slow-moving caravan to Parliament on Monday January 17, bringing the city centre to a standstill.
