BA flights to Spain and other European destinations cancelled due to system failures

Social media was lit up on Thursday May 25 with angry messages from British Airways passengers who were unable to check in for their flights due to a system failure, with many more left sitting on stuffy planes on the tarmac as the crew scrambled to sort the IT error.

The website and mobile phone app crashed simultaneously, so passengers were left clueless about where to go in the airport.

"Apparently [BA] systems are down again so we don't know what stand to go to and ground crew are all out of position," one furious customer wrote.

"Major systems failure according to our flight crew. 1 hour on taxiway no coaches and likely no baggage," another passenger said.

"Being stuck on the tarmac in Heathrow while your system is down is absurd. Let the planes disembark while you figure out your boarding system," she added.

Because of the tech glitch, several British Airways flights were cancelled on Thursday, including trips to Barcelona, Paris and Amsterdam.

People trying to use the British Airways website were told: "There is currently no access to your account while we upgrade our system."

A later response read: "We're sorry but ba.com is very busy at the moment and couldn't deal with your request.

"Please do try again - if it still doesn't work, it may be better to try again at another time."

Despite all evidence to the contrary, a British Airways spokesperson said that no flights had been affected by the system outage and that the team was working hard to resolve the issue in a timely manner.
