Avenida Mediterráneo bridge in Almería city to be torn down this summer

Alternative routes are being prepared ahead of the expected start in May 2025

The Avenida del Mediterráneo bridge in Almería is set to be removed this summer as part of the ongoing project to bury the train tracks underground in preparation for the arrival of the High-Speed Railway (AVE).

The sub-delegate of the Government in Almería, José María Martín, confirmed that the works are progressing well and that the demolition of the bridge could take place as soon as May 2025.

All other bridges over the railway line, which has long divided the city in two, have already been dismantled, leading to a series of traffic diversions.

The removal of this final bridge is expected to cause the greatest disruption to traffic, so authorities are working on alternative routes to minimise the impact on mobility.

Mr Martín reassured residents that the urban integration works are advancing at full speed, with over 30 percent of the project already completed. He emphasised that, barring any unforeseen incidents, the project remains on schedule, with the final stretch of the AVE expected to be completed by 2026.

A new train station is also being built exactly where the old one was, and until it is ready the trains to Almería now stop up in Huércal-Almería, several kilometres away, with a bus replacement service taking passengers the rest of the way.

Although an exact date for the bridge removal has not yet been set, the government has informed local residents that May is a possibility. The other two bridges that up until now crossed the railway tracks – the La Goleta underpass and the road to the airport – have already been demolished.

Some are worried that removing the bridge will create excessive road closures and significantly disrupt traffic, but the Ministry and Adif are working closely with the City Council to ensure the impact on daily commutes is kept to a minimum.
