ARCHIVED - August 15 Free guided walk in La Atalaya and Coto Fortuna in the countryside of Mazarron
A hike around the beautiful countryside and historic mine sites to the west of Mazarrón
In the countryside to the west of the town of Mazarrón lie the villages of La Atalaya and Leiva, and this walk in the area also takes visitors to the hills of the Coto de Fortuna. Nowadays they are part of an attractive nature reserve, but in the late 19th and early 20th centuries they played an important part in the mining boom in Mazarrón and yielded important quantities of alum and alumite.
This is a surprisingly beautiful area, high above the flat plains, and the arid-looking peaks are in fact covered with young pine forests and are a welcoming oasis for walkers and lovers of the great outdoors. The lower slopes are dotted with the remains of Mazarron´s mining past, with relics dating back to Roman times.
This 3-hour hike over a distance of 9 kilometres begins as the heat of the day begins to die down at 18.00 and registration is available online here or here or through the tourist office in Puerto de Mazarrón (telephone 968 594426, email oficinaturismomazarron@gmail.com). The registration period opens a week before the event and ends at 13.30 the day prior to it taking place.
The wearing of facemasks, caps and sun cream is strongly recommended and participants should bring drinking water and wear appropriate footwear. Those registering must give ID details, and under no circumstances may people join without prior registration.
Participants will require their own transport to reach the start and finish point of the walk.
