ARCHIVED - August 14 to 24 Semana de la Huerta y el Mar in Los Alcazares 2022
A week of traditional celebrations, outdoor restaurants, and artisan market and folk music on the inland shore of the Mar Menor
The Semana Internacional de la Huerta y El Mar in Los Alcázares is a colourful event which has always been very popular with both residents and visitors and makes for a very pleasant visit on any one of the evenings between the 14th and 24th August. Apart from the programmed events (see below) there is plenty of atmosphere in and around the artisan market, in the “barracas”, where traditional lunch and dinners are served at very affordable prices to customers seated outside, and throughout the town as Los Alcázares recalls the days when the agricultural workers of the Murcia countryside used to decamp to the coast for a couple of weeks before returning home for the autumn.
These “barracas” open every evening at 20.30.
The schedule for the 2022 Semana Internacional de la Huerta y El Mar in Los Alcázares includes the following:
Exhibition, open every day at 20.30: Indumentaria y Ajuar en la Huerta Murciana, a display of everyday household items characteristic of the way of life of those who lived in the “Huerta” of Murcia in the past.
Sunday August 14
21.00: The stand of the Algezares district offers a demonstration of how to make the traditional “esparteña” sandals and tastings of “tortas de pascua”.
Music and dance are provided in the Recinto de Fiestas by the Grupo Folklórico “Saavedra Fajardo” of the Peña Huertana “La Esparteña” in Algezares, in the municipality of Murcia.
In addition, the Peña Huertana “El Limonar” gives a demonstration of typical embroidery.
22.30: Opening gala of the fiestas at the Polideportivo Municipal on Avenida Joaquín Blume, including the opening speeches by the Mayor of Los Alcázares, Mario García Pérez Cervera, and the actress Pepa Aniorte.
This is followed by Diana Navarro in a concert entitled “De la Piquer a la Navarro” (addmission free of charge).
Monday August 15, the national holiday of Assumption Day and the patron of Los Alcázares, Nuestra Señora de la Asunción
21.00: The Peña Huertana “La morenica” hosts a special gastronomic day featuring “sémola” and coffee flan.
Musical entertainment is provided by the Cuadrilla de Patiño (in the municipality of Murcia).
23.00: The figure of Nuestra Señora la Virgen de la Asunción is officially welcomed at the jetty of the old fish market, with music and dancing from the Cuadrilla de Patiño.
Tuesday August 16
20.30: Tribute to José Carrasco García in the public park named after him, with music from the Cuadrilla de Las Torres de Cotillas (in the municipality of Murcia).
21.00: The hosts at the Polideportivo Municipal on Avenida Joaquín Blume for the evening are the Peña Huertana “La Crilla”, offering a chance to try their fried cod in tomato sauce with peppers and onions and special dessert.
22.30: “La Parranda” at the Polideportivo Municipal, a performance by the Compañía Lírica de Zarzuela de Madrid. Tickets 10 euros available from elcorteinglés.es/entradas and at the door two hours beforehand.
22.00: The Cuadrilla de Las Torres de Cotillas perform in the Plaza del Real de la Feria.
Wednesday August 17
21.00: The stand of Algezares at the Polideportivo Municipal offers a display of traditional needlework, while the Peña Huertana “La Morenica” host a demonstration of esparto grass working.
22.30: Carlos Núñez live in concert at the Polideportivo Municipal, with the Cuadrilla de Aledo and Javi Andreo “El Nieto”. Tickets 10 euros from elcorteinglés.es/entradas and at the door two hours beforehand.
Thursday August 18
21.00: The stand of Algezares at the Polideportivo Municipal welcomes troubador Pedro López Martínez “El Cardoso I”, signing his books “Un verso en cada latido” and “Las mil décimas del Cardoso. Diez mil versos y ochenta mil silabas”.
21.00: “Malagueñas” workshop led by Miguel Ángel Montesinos Sánchez.
22.30: Official speeches precede a concert at the Polideportivo Municipal by Los Parrandboleros. Admission free of charge.
Friday August 17
21.00: The stand of Algezares at the Polideportivo Municipal offers a demonstration of how to make the traditional “esparteña” sandals and tastings of “pastelón algezareño”.
22.30: The annual folk music festival begins at the Polideportivo Municipal with performances by the Compañía de Expresiones Cultural Costarriquenses (Costa Rica), the Asociación Etnográfica “La Hijuela” (Patiño in Murcia), Ballet Folklórico “Rumicani” (Argentina) and Asociación Folklórica “El Salitre del Faycan” & “Parranda del Cura” (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria). Admission free of charge.
Saturday August 20
12.00: Batucada drummers set the tone for the day.
12.30: Free pasteles de carne at the Playa Manzanares and in Los Narejos.
19.00: The 19th annual “Bando de la Huerta y el Mar”, a recreation of the Bando which is held in the week after Easter every year in the city of Murcia. Parade route: Los Narejos. Avenida Ferrocarril, Calle Marqués de Rozalejo, Avenida de Los Narejos, Avenida Carril de Las Palmeras, Avenida de la Libertad, Avenida 13 de octubre.
19.30: Paparajotes, a cookery masterclass in the Plaza del Real de la Feria.
21.00: At the Polideportivo Municipal the Peña Huertana “El Limonar” offer their “olla Gitana” dish with a dessert of “Milhojas” (millefeuilles), while a workshop focuses on fried chard with sardines and spring onions.
22.30: Poetry recital at the Polideportivo Municipal by José Ángel García Manzanera, along with music from the Asociación Trovera José María Marín (La Palma, Cartagena), featuring Patricia Navarro López “La Trovera”, Emilio del Carmelo Tomás Loba and Juan M. Noguera “Llanito” on guitar.
Also featured is the “Antología de la Chirigota de Beniaján”.
Admission free of charge.

Also on the bill are the Asociación Folklórica “El Salitre del Faycan” and “Parranda del Cura” (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) and the independent dance company “Fusión Folklórica” (Mexico). 21.00: At the Polideportivo Municipal the Peña Huertana “El Chisquero” offer tastings of their “Potaje con pelotas de bacalao” and “Torrijas al vino dulce con miel”m while a workshop focuses on cooking with courgette and tuna.
22.30: “Los Piñana, tres ramas de un mismo tronco”, a flamenco concert celebrating the Piñana family (Curro Piñana, Antonio Piñana and Rafael Piñana).
Also performing are the Rondalla “Son del Mar Menor” from Los Alcázares.
Admission free of charge.
22.00: In the Plaza de Punta Calera (Los Narejos) a performance by the Compañía de Expresiones Culturales Costarriquenses.
22.00: Performance by the independent dance company “Fusión Folklórica” (Mexico) in the Plaza del Real de la Feria).
Wednesday August 24
22.30: The closing gala at the Polideportivo Municipal features the Grupo de Coros y Danzas “Siete Coronas” from Puente Tocinos (Murcia), the Folklore Ensemble Hajduki (Poland) and the independent dance company “Fusión Folklórica” (Mexico).
Other entertainment is in the form of a traditional murciano “jota” dance, music from “Trío Sombras” and a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Semana Internacional de la Huerta y el Mar”.
After that, music is provided by the Orquesta Lirica with Lupe Duran (soprano) and Gonzalo Terán (tenor). Admission free of charge.
