ARCHIVED - Work to begin on new wetlands for the Mar Menor basin this summer
The three wetlands will prevent mineral-heavy water running into the Mar Menor after periods of rain

The Mar Menor recovery plan, which is benefiting from contributions from municipalities across the Region of Murcia, is progressing at an impressive pace and the Ministry for Ecological Transition plans to implement its key measures before the end of the year. To date, 50 million of the 484 million euros of the Framework of Priority Actions for the Recovery of the Mar Menor has been invested.
Next on the agenda is the development of three wetlands that will serve as green filters to retain the run off from farm land after periods of heavy rain. They’ll also act as a treatment for the water pumped from the aquifer, which will eliminate any harmful nitrates.
The Technical Office of the Mar Menor will begin its Environmental Impact Statement this month and after a short time is allowed for any objections, the plan is to begin expropriating the land this summer.
This will allow the team to start developing the wetlands in autumn.
Looking forward to 2024, the recovery plan aims to install several more green filter areas in the southern arch of the Mar Menor to help treat the water from floods in the Sierra Minera.
Several other projects are currently underway, such as the renovation of the drive pipe that captures water in the Albujón, as well as the continued monitoring of the channels that cross the Campo de Cartagena.
And running in parallel is the work of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS), which estimates that the water supply has now been completely cut off to around 90%, or 8,460 hectares, of the illegal irrigation systems in the area.
Later this month the team will create a users’ board that will update the census of legal irrigators in the Mar Menor
In Los Alcázares, which has been granted 3.15 million as part of the recovery plan, the ‘Mi Mar Menor’ campaign was launched on Wednesday March 1.
"The campaign tries to raise awareness to achieve the participation of everyone, of those who have a leisure or work relationship with the Mar Menor", minister Miguel González said at the start-up.
