ARCHIVED - Spanish Air Force heading for Germany to collect respirators this afternoon
Air Force planes have been busy flying to Shanghai to collect medical equipment and tester kits as well as undertaking internal flights with valuable medical supplies and receiving materials courtesy of NATO
Two Air Force planes will be taking off this afternoon destined for Lübeck (Germany) to collect medical supplies, specifically respirators, to deal with the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Chief of Defense Staff (Jemad), General Miguel Ángel Villarroya, took part in the daily press conference following the meeting of the Coronavirus Technical Management Committee at the Palacio de la Moncloa in Madrid today, detailing various actions undertaken by the Armed Forces in the last few hours.
General Villarroya gave details of missions flown by the Air Force including the arrival of an A400M from the Turkish Air Force which carried 25 tons of sanitary material destined for Spain including masks, antibacterial liquids, ocular protectors and other materials supplied by NATO, of the A400M of the Spanish Air Force currently en-route to Shanghai to collect sanitary supplies and internal flights such as that undertaken from Valladolid to the Balearic Islands carrying important medical supplies.
This afternoon two Air Force aircraft will fly to the German city of Lübeck to collect respirators for the Spanish Health Service fight against Covid-19.
Today a total of 7,753 members of the Armed Forces are working in 284 locations throughout Spain in the fight against the coronavirus.
The latest daily coronavirus update on Thursday 2nd April provides sobering news for any who might have thought that a downturn in the Covid-19 epidemic in Spain was imminent, with the death toll having risen by 950 – the largest increase so far in any one day – to 10,003.
At the same time another 8,102 new cases have been confirmed to bring the total up to 10,238, and with over 54,000 people having been hospitalized (over 6,000 of them in intensive care units following a rise of 220 over the last 24 hours) the health services across the country continue to be stretched to and beyond the limits of their resources. At the same time the number of recoveries has risen to close to 27,000, but while new cases continue to outnumber the patients cured the burden on hospitals and medical staff continues to increase.
Nonetheless, Salvador Illa, the Minister for Health, concludes from the latest data that the spread of the epidemic is now slowing in Spain, after almost three weeks of lockdown and three days since the economic shutdown announced at the weekend. Referring to the latest figures regarding new cases, he says that the upward curve has stabilized and we are entering the slow-down phase.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
