article_detailARCHIVED ARTICLE -April 25 Modernist parade in Cartagena takes us back to the year 1900
Cartagena celebrates the years of Modernist optimism and style in the early 20th century
A series of guided visits, events and exhibitions are being held in Cartagena this spring to celebrate the city’s Modernist heritage, dating from the influx of wealth around the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and among them is this costume parade starting at 19.00 on Saturday 25th April. “La Cartagena de 1900: Un paseo por el tiempo” harks back to a time when Cartagena was a flourishing industrial city when the newly rich built sumptuous palatial homes in the centre, featuring towers, domes and wrought iron balcony railings which still decorate the centre today. This was an elegant and modern city in which the bustle of the port existed alongside the first motor vehicles, as the ladies strutted along the seafront with their magnificent dresses and hats, accompanied by impeccably dressed gentlemen.
The lasting heritage may have been provided by industrialists, architects and builders, but this is a tribute to the stylish bourgeois class who commissioned their work, consisting of an hour-long stroll through the centre, starting at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and progressing along the pedestrian Calle Mayor, past the Plaza de San Sebastián and the Plaza del Icue to Calle Carmen.
