Amazon founder shows off his new superyacht in Cartagena
The multi-million dollar vessel arrived in Murcia after sailing around Menorca and Ibiza
There was much excitement in Cartagena this week when the super-luxury megayacht belonging to American tycoon and founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, sailed into the Navantia shipyard.
The ‘Koru’, reportedly worth 500 million US dollars, made a brief stop-over in Murcia on Monday August 19 for some minor maintenance. The enormous 127-metre-long boat has a distinctive blue hull and three huge masts, and understandably stopped people in their tracks as they strolled along the Alfonso XII dock.
Cartagena locals are eager to catch a glimpse of the luxury schooner’s owner, but shipyard workers have had to sign a confidentiality agreement, so it’s not known if the legendary Jeff Bezos is even on board.
The 'Koru', which was on a voyage through the Mediterranean, had to take refuge on the coast of Menorca due to the DANA that hit the Balearic Islands a few days ago. The heavy rains and strong winds forced Bezos to anchor near the island to protect his boat, considered the second largest sailboat in the world.
It’s beaten only by the 'Sailing Yacht A', which has also made a stop in the Port of Cartagena to undergo repair work at Navantia.
The yacht, which can accommodate around 60 people, was built with the intention of being sustainable and energy efficient, hence the use of sails to reduce fuel usage when conditions permit.
Sailing alongside this luxury vessel is the impressive ‘Abeona’, also owned by Bezos, which is used to accommodate additional crew, as well as store entertainment equipment or other supplies, and acts as a support for the main vessel. The 75 million dollar ‘Abeona’ is 75 metres long, has the capacity to accommodate 40 people and has a helipad.
