ARCHIVED - Alicante parcel delivery man stole packages worth 5,000 euros to sell online
The scam came to light when an Alicante woman complained that a 20-gram gold ingot she had purchased had not arrived
A parcel delivery driver employed by a firm in Alicante has been arrested in connection with the theft of more than 5,000 euros worth of packages.
The 20-year-old allegedly stole the parcels, including a 20-gram gold ingot valued at 1,200 euros, and sold them through various online trading websites.
His scam came to light when the woman who had purchased the jewellery complained to the driver's employers that she had still not received the ingot, despite being at home waiting for the delivery and receiving a message saying it had indeed been delivered.
The National Police was notified and investigators requested CCTV images from nearby properties. The delivery driver soon became the main suspect after officers discovered he had several profiles on online second-hand trading sites, one of which featured an undelivered purchase reported by another complainant.
When questioned, the detainee made a number of "contradictory" and "untrue" explanations, claiming residents were not at home at the time of delivery, so goods were placed in mailboxes, or that he had called the purchasers, when in reality he hadn't.
During a search of the delivery man's home, police found several unopened packages addressed to other recipients, including mobile phones, food and drink products, clothes, a cleaning robot, an electric scooter, furniture and a television.
These were seized and handed over to their legitimate owners. However, other items reported missing couldn't be recovered as the suspect had already sold them online.
