Alicante eyes direct flights to Canada as tourism talks take off

Costa Blanca tourism bosses have already approached several of the major airlines

Alicante appears to have made quite a stir at the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in Madrid last month as it’s just been revealed that tourism bosses are now in talks to establish a direct flight between Alicante-Elche Airport and Canada.

And while the Canadian counterparts are also looking at expanding to China, a spokesperson stressed that in the medium and long-term, their sights are firmly set on Europe, with the Costa Blanca at the top of the list. In fact, negotiations are already underway with Ryanair, Jet2 and easyJet.

At the end of Fitur, the president of the Alicante Provincial Council announced a new connection with Moldova, as well as the recent addition of flights to Athens and Naples.

Since Alicante Airport already has direct routes to the US, and given that more than 18.4 million passengers passed through its doors in 2024, it’s a natural choice for a connection with Canada.

Alicante Airport is also on the verge of expansion, with an investment of 20 million euros in place to extend the terminal and taxiways, which will greatly increase its capacity in the future.
