ARCHIVED - Alicante braces itself for cold, rain and snow: weather outlook Feb 6-9
More than 100 l/m2 of rain is expected to fall over the next few days in the Marina Alta region and northwest of Alicante province

In sharp contrast to the clear, sunny skies and welcome temperatures in the high teens and 20s over the weekend, conditions will take a drastic turn in Alicante province this week, with a dip in temperatures accompanied by wind, rain and snow in mountainous areas.
Lows close to 0ºC are forecast, and in some cases, below zero: Villena (-2), Sax (-2), Cocentaina (0), Elda (1), Alcoy (2 ) and Xixona (2), according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
It's time to get those brollies back out with more than 100 l/m2 of rain expected to fall over the next few days in the Marina Alta region and northwest of Alicante province. And there's a risk of electrical storms to accompany winds of up to 60km/h, particularly on Tuesday.
The Climatology Laboratory of the University of Alicante has also warned that, in addition to the rainfall, an easterly storm will leave behind "an altered maritime situation and snow on the province's peaks".
"The easterly flow will intensify, and cold air will also arrive from the Mediterranean", added the UA.
Monday February 6 will get off to a cloudy start, increasing throughout the morning to become more overcast with precipitation in general, more frequent and abundant in the northern regions with snow levels at 1000 to 1200 metres.
Inland areas can expect plenty of morning mist or fog. It will certainly feel colder with a marked dip in temperatures, and frost inland. A light variable wind in the morning will increase from midday, becoming more easterly with intervals of strong intensity in coastal areas where waves could reach three metres in height.
Alcoy: 1ºC to 9ºC
Alicante: 6ºC to 14ºC
Denia: 5ºC to 13ºC
Elche: 3ºC to 14ºC
Orihuela: 2ºC to 14ºC
Cloud and rain will mark much of Tuesday February 7, with locally persistent precipitation on the north coast later in the day. The winds will persist and pick up gust in the afternoon with frost inland and snow levels at 800 metres. Wind from the north and north-east will be light inland and occasionally strong or very strong on the coast.
Alcoy: 2ºC to 8ºC
Alicante: 5ºC to 15ºC
Denia: 6ºC to 13ºC
Elche: 4ºC to 14ºC
Orihuela: 3ºC to 15ºC
The outlook for Wednesday February 8 is cloudy or overcast skies with precipitation, more abundant in the morning and likely to be persistent on the north coast. Snow levels at 700-1000m, with significant accumulations in inland mountainous areas. Wind from the northeast will hit coastal areas with very strong gusts until mid-afternoon.
Alcoy: 2ºC to 11ºC
Alicante: 5ºC to 17ºC
Denia: 5ºC to 14ºC
Elche: 3ºC to 17ºC
Orihuela: 1ºC to 16ºC
After a cloudy or overcast start, the clouds will disperse later in the day on Thursday February 9, but give way to rain, which will be heavier in the north of the province. Thermometers will fall with frost inland and north easterly winds will feel considerably more intense on the coast.
Alcoy: 3ºC to 8ºC
Alicante: 7ºC to 14ºC
Denia: 7ºC to 14ºC
Elche: 6ºC to 13ºC
Orihuela: 4ºC to 13ºC
