ARCHIVED - Aguilas secures almost 2 million euros of EU funding for restoration of the Edificio Ruano
Restoration of the 19th-century building in the centre of Águilas will be completed in 2026
The Town Hall of Águilas has announced that over 1.86 million euros of finance has been secured from European Next Generation funds for the restoration of the Edificio Ruano in the Plaza de España.
The 1,265-square-metre property was built in 1883 to a design by architect Justo Millán, who was also responsible for emblematic buildings such as the Teatro Romea and the bull ring in Murcia, the Palacio Provincial in Albacete and the bull ring of Algiers. It was commissioned by the Ruano y Blázquez family, one of the most important and influential of the late 19th century in the Region of Murcia.
In terms of style the Casa Ruano corresponds to an eclectic version of geometrical modernism, and is one of the few of its kind to remain standing in the municipality of Águilas, and the restoration, which it is hoped will be completed in 2026, will preserve the original exterior design.
As for the restoration, the project submitted by the Town Hall is named “Bioclatic Culture” and was placed 6th among 180 competing for the European funds. 700 further applications were rejected before the judging process began.
The next step is now to put out to tender the contract for drawing up the Plan of Works, which must conform to the conditions stipulated within the subsidy provided. These are concerned with energy efficiency, accessibility, inhabitability, sustainability and conservation, among others, as defined by New European Bauhaus.
Mayoress Mari Carmen Moreno is confident that this will be achieved without difficulty after the participation of over 900 local residents in a survey regarding the preferred uses for the building.
