Aguilas roundabout gets a jazzy makeover from local artist
There are plans to beautify several more public spots in Águilas in the coming months
Águilas mayor Mari Carmen Moreno and the councillor for Culture, Maido Simó, both turned out on Friday June 23 to inaugurate the new artwork that now adorns the Paseo de Parra roundabout. The sculptures, three colourful pillars, are the work of local artist Lorenzo Martínez, who was inspired by his family to create the striking statues.
“My grandparents taught me the importance of poetry, work, and painting. For this reason, I wanted to show those pillars that look to the sky and highlight the importance of the legacy and the teaching that the family leaves us,” he said.
The pillars are part of Lorenzo’s ‘Mediterranean’ collection which is dominated by light and colour, signifying the rich landscape of the area. The columns, the artist explained, are like three blank canvases that he sprinkled with his flagship colours to bring joy and vitality to the structures.
Mayor Moreno confirmed that plans are underway to beautify several other public landmarks in Aguilas using artwork from local residents.
“In Águilas we are lucky to have great artists and we must promote them. For this reason, we will continue betting on art and artists from Águilas,” she said.
