ARCHIVED - Aguilas, Cartagena and San Javier were the hottest places in Spain this Monday
Warmer than usual temperatures for this time of year could make this the hottest January ever
It was a scorcher of a day in the Region of Murcia this Monday January 9, with Águilas officially the hottest place in Spain according to Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), topping out at 27ºC.
This was followed by a further six Murcia municipalities, including Cartagena in second place and San Javier Airport in third, all of them registering temperatures in excess of 24ºC in what is the first week back at work and school for many after the Christmas holidays.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in Las Palmas and Vallehermoso in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, both in the Canary Islands, came in eighth and ninth places for the hottest municipalities in Spain, and bringing up the rear of the top 10 was another Murcia locality – Mazarrón.
While the shorts and T-shirt weather in early January is a vindication for many expats of the decision to move out to sunny Spain, the truth is that such weather conditions are not typical and, in the light of a 2022 that was officially the warmest year on record in Spain, may be indicative of a particularly warm year to come.
Heatwaves and other weather phenomena caused by climate change have claimed the lives of around 16,000 people in Spain, so the current warm weather, while pleasant, is nothing to be sniffed at.
However, there are reasons for optimism, as Spain is in the process of introducing several extensive measures to mitigate the effects of the climate and energy crises.
