Aguilas clears floodwater channels as weather forecasters warn of possible heavy storms

The Ramblas of Águilas are being cleared of vegetation to ensure they carry as much water as possible.

As the last week of August begins this is the time of year when, before the effects of climate change made the weather less predictable, locals in the Region of Murcia would begin anxiously scanning the sky for signs of the heavy rain which traditionally marked the end of the summer season.

Harking back to those times, meteorologists warn that this coming weekend temperatures will fall in the Region – at last! – and that there is a chance of significant rainfall!

This, of course, brings with it the worry that there could be destructive flash flooding in a “gota fría” event, and Town Halls all over the south-east of Spain have grown used to ensuring that their “ramblas” (natural floodwater channels) are free of debris and vegetation should there be a cloudburst. In Águilas the focus over the last week has been on the Rambla de Matalentisco, while at the same time drains and floodwater drainage infrastructures are being checked to ensure they are working optimally.
