ARCHIVED - A disappointing February for Corvera Airport
The Murcia airport is not seeing the level of growth desired by operators, who are pinning their hopes on the summer season

The Región de Murcia International Airport had a total of 20,781 registered passengers travelling through its hallowed halls this February 2023, barely 2% more than in the same month last year and still less than half that in February 2019, the year before the pandemic.
In relation to other Spanish airports, Corvera Airport is advancing at a snail’s pace. All the airports managed by the company Aena presented an increase in passenger traffic of 39% over 2021, and already 2.2% more than in February 2019 but Corvera in near the tail end of this growth.
Of the total number of passengers recorded in February 2023 at Corvera, 18,450 traveled on international flights rather than going to other Spanish destinations, showing that the airport has massive importance for linking the Region of Murcia with the outside world.
Indeed, it just won the ‘Best Airport in Europe’ award in the category of airports with fewer than 2 million passengers per year. Yet this February’s air traffic was just 41.6% of what it was in February 2019 traffic and 2.1% less than in 2022.
In terms of operations, the Murcia airport handled 180 movements this February, 16% less than last year and half as many as in 2019.
It’s also true, however, that the airport’s busiest time kicks in from March onwards, and it is hoped that increased funding to improve and expand the airport’s transport links will mean a bumper season this summer.
