ARCHIVED - 72-year-old tourist drowns on the beach in Velez-Malaga
The woman, who was holidaying at a nearby campsite, had been swimming in the sea when she was unable to get out
A woman aged 72 years old drowned yesterday afternoon, Wednesday November 23. on the Almayate beach in the town of Vélez-Málaga in Malaga province, according to Emergencias 112 Andalucía.
At around 2.45pm yesterday, the 112 emergency telephone number received several alerts from individuals warning that a woman had entered the sea and could not get out of the water in an area of the beach near the Rio Seco.
While the nationality of the woman is not currently known, it has been reported in a statement from the emergency services that she was a tourist who was said to be staying at a nearby campsite.
Local Police, the 061 Health Emergency Centre, the Red Cross, the Civil Guard and Civil Protection were all sent to the scene, as well as Maritime Rescue, which mobilised a boat to the area to search in the water for the woman.
When the coastguard finally located the woman it was too late to save her, and they transported her body to the port of Caleta de Vélez-Málaga, where the waiting medical team certified her death.
