A warm and sunny Yuletide awaits us in Murcia this year, raising questions about what the year ahead has in store

This Christmas week in the Region of Murcia, the unusually warm temperatures will continue during the daytime, even warming up as we go through the week to reach highs of up to 25ºC in Lorca on Christmas Eve, Saturday December 24.

And while these temperatures will fall slightly on Christmas Day, Sunday December 25, there will still be highs of 22ºC – again in Lorca – and an average of around 20ºC for most people.

Elsewhere in the Region, temperatures at around midday and mid-afternoon will be from 19-25ºC during the whole week, while minimums at night-time will be noticeably chillier than last week but still managing to breach the 10-degree barrier in central Murcia and on the coast.

These unseasonably mild temperatures will be accompanied by glorious sunshine, interspersed with high cloud cover. But there will be none of the rains, fog or warnings for strong winds that we saw last week.

All in all, you couldn’t ask for better Christmas weather if you were in Australia. It hardly feels like winter at all, let alone Christmas.

But all this does make you wonder, if the normally cold December looks like this now, what will the New Year bring? The climate crisis is on our front doorstep and undeniably staring us in the face right now. And while it’s pleasant enough to enjoy so much sunshine, you have to ask whether we’ll get any rains at all in the normally wet April, or whether we’ll see flooding worse than ever. Will the year ahead once again break records for the hottest summer ever or, contrary to this winter, will it be cold and damp and even snowing in August 2023?

When making our New Year’s Resolutions in the possibly boiling January sun, we would do well to bear this in mind and ask how we can make a difference…
