ARCHIVED - 25 barraca open-air restaurants will be back for the Murcia Spring Festival 2022
The popular ‘barracas’ have been away for two years due to Covid, but now they are returning to serve up typical, traditional Murcia food and drink (although now it’s more expensive!)
The Fiestas de Primavera (Spring Festival) in Murcia city, which include the Bando de la Huerta and the Entierro de la Sardina, are drawing ever closer and that means the return of the barracas to show off the very best of Murcian food.
The traditional wooden huts, based on the design of old peasant houses in Murcia, will be set up around the city to serve typical food and drink from the region, with large open-air eating areas around them.
The barracas will once again be set up the on April 17 after not being present for the last two years due to the pandemic. Now the members of the traditional ‘peñas huertanas’ groups can dust off their refajo and zaragüeles for their costumes again, and put some meat on the grill to enjoy the 2022 festivities in good old-fashioned style.
This year, a total of 25 barracas will be set up in the squares and gardens of the city of Murcia, to which will be added another 11 barracas in the headquarters of the peñas huertanas. However, this is still lower than the number of barracas in previous years.
The opening date is scheduled for April 17, Easter Sunday, and they will stay open until April 24, after the Spring Fiestas, according to the calendar that has been organised by the Town Hall and the Federation of Peñas Huertanas. They’ve already starting getting ready in some places, with lorries were unloading the iron and reeds to start assembling the structure for the market gardens, which in the next few days will be filled with furniture and cold stores in which to store the food.
How much will the food cost at the barracas in 2022?
Those in charge of the peñas huertanas still have to decide on the prices that will be applied to the barracas this year, as the rise in food prices and the increase in transport and petrol costs will also take their toll. The president of the Federation, Juan Pablo Hernández, has reported that they have scheduled a meeting to address the issue of prices and hope that this will result in the rates for this year 2022.
***UPDATED—Just in (6/4/22): The Federation of Peñas Huertanas has decided to increase the food prices in the barracas in 2022. On average, as a result of the rising cost of energy and raw materials in Spain, the food and drink at the Spring Festival in Murcia city will be around 10-15% higher than in 2019.
