24-year-old gardener dies of heatstroke in Murcia

A 24-year old worker died from the heat on Monday July 31 while gardening on a property in the Parazuelos area of Mazarrón, very close to Lorca’s Puntas de Calnegre. According to official reports, the young man’s colleague called the emergency services shortly after 1pm and reported that the boy has fallen unconscious.

Lifeguards from the nearby surveillance unit of Lorca City Council rushed to the scene and tried to resuscitate the worker until an ambulance arrived, as well as officers from the Guardia Civil and the Mazarrón Local Police. But despite their best efforts, the man passed away.

The health authorities of the Region of Murcia later confirmed that the young man died as a result of heatstroke.

There were no weather warnings in place in the Region on Monday which would prohibit strenuous outdoor labour, but at the time the man fainted, Mazarrón weather station recorded a temperature of 32.8ºC.

This is the second fatality caused by heat this summer, after the death of a 42-year-old man of North African origin on July 20 who was picking tomatoes in a greenhouse in La Majada, a district of Mazarrón.

The heat continues unabated as we enter August in the Region of Murcia, and the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated an orange alert on Tuesday 1st for significant risk in the Vega del Segura, where temperatures are tipped to hit 42ºC.

In addition, Altiplano, Noroeste, Valle del Guadalentín, Lorca and Águilas will be under yellow alert.

The General Directorate of Public Health has also activated level 2, or medium risk, of the National Plan of Preventive Actions of the Effects of Excess Temperature on Health for Tuesday and Wednesday (August 1 and 2).
