107 migrants arrive by sea in Murcia in one night
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
A trail of small dinghies made their way to the Murcia coast on Tuesday August 15
In a period of less than 24 hours, a caravan of tiny boats, or pateras, crossed the treacherous waters from North Africa to the Murcian coast. On Tuesday August 15 alone, 107 men, women and children were rescued from the
Region’s seas.
Thankfully, all of the irregular migrants landed safely and have since been transferred to the Temporary Attention Centre for Foreigners in Cartagena.
The rescue vessels of the Salvamento Marítimo come to the aid of countless pateras in distress and along the Murcian coast this Tuesday, they took care of practically all of the arriving migrants. The only exception was a small boat carrying 10 people that drifted towards
Águilas at around 1.50pm and was intercepted by the Guardia Civil.
In the early hours of the morning, a dinghy with 16 people arrived in the waters of
Cartagena and shortly after 5am a second patera carrying 10 migrants landed in the same area.
The flow didn’t slow down as the day moved on and at 6.30pm a boat carrying 27 passengers, including a woman and a child, was intercepted off Cartagena, followed by another one with five migrants at 7.30pm.
Finally, just before eight in the evening, three other boats in which a total of 39 people were travelling were also located off Cartagena’s coast.
