ARCHIVED - 100 people will work 7 days a week this summer to keep the Mar Menor clean
An initial budget of 8.4 million euros is being earmarked just for the removal of organic material and sludge

Murcia’s regional government has promised to invest nearly 8.5 million euros to keep removing “biomass and ova” from the endangered Mar Menor lagoon between April and September this year.
They have split the work into two separate parts, both of which they are putting out to tender – 4.7 million euros for the removal of organic material such as seaweed and 3.7 million for the ova.
In both cases, the period of the contract will be for a total of six months, during the warmest time of year when there is more chance of algal bloom and anoxia developing in the blighted lagoon.
This has been stated by the Minister of Environment, Mar Menor, Universities and Research, Juan María Vázquez, during the visit he made this Wednesday to the beach at Los Urrutias to see the work being carried out by the cleaning brigades.
“At the moment and in the short term we have about 8.4 million euros to clean the Mar Menor, but we will invest considerably more money in this work and others like it,” he said.
“This year we have already removed 2,054 tons of biomass and ova, which has involved an investment of 1,626,000 euros.”
He added that 40 workers are engaged in removing biomass on the shore of the Mar Menor right now, and with the new investment this will grow to around 100 people, working (in shift rotation) from Monday to Sunday throughout the whole summer.
